Messina 1347 is a medium-weight euro game that will take you back to the time of the plague, when the aristocratic families of Messina, Italy, struggled to survive while trying to maintain as much influence as possible. The work of Vladimír Suchý (Underwater Cities, Prague Caput Regni) combines many different mechanics in an innovative way, such as worker management, progress tracks or moderating the board by adding more hexes. Just like in Prague's Caput Regni, Suchý skilfully balances between the rules of the euro game and maintaining the plot. As aristocratic houses, you will try to help the local inhabitants by settling them in out-of-town mansions or placing them in quarantine huts. With a multitude of actions to complete, you'll be able to progress through the three Chronicles tracks and earn as many points as possible. The winner will be the one of you who renders the greatest contribution to the plague of the Black Death of Messina. The game, in addition to the standard gameplay, also offers a solo mode and an asymmetrical variant.
Black Death
Initially, nothing foreshadowed the end of the world. A day like any other. Calm waves wash the gentle coasts of Messina, Italy. More ships dock in its ports, bringing goods with them from all over the world. One of them is coming from Crimea. There are rats on board, and fleas on these rats. In a moment, they will crawl ashore. Jumping from person to person, they will spread a mysterious disease that will kill a third of Europe. This disease will be called the Black Death.
Gameplay
Messina 1347 takes place over 6 rounds. Initially, you have 3 Governors per round, in each of which you play 3 turns. Later in the game, you'll be able to get more Governors and therefore more turns per round. The round ends when each of you has used all of your Governors. Each turn consists of 4 steps: placing the Governor on the city tile, rescuing the Citizen (if possible), fighting the plague and performing the action indicated on the hex or repopulating the District.
Action description
In the first round, you send Governors to Messina, and then move them around the next hexes of the city. Please note that you cannot place a Governor on a space with another Governor. If the selected hex has a Dweller token, you can save it by placing it on an empty space on your estate, or in the Quarantine Hut if it had a Plague cube on the hex. You will be able to fight the Plague with Fire tokens, thus leveling up on the Chronicle of Merit track. Any unremoved Plague cube will result in negative points at the end of the game.
Scoring
The inhabitants are divided into three categories: Artisans, Nuns, and Aristocrats. You move the rescued inhabitants to the mansion on your player boards, where you can activate them, securing numerous benefits. The possibility of performing additional actions will depend on your progress on the three tracks of the Chronicles of Merit, Church and City. At the end of the game, you'll earn points for these tracks, as well as for repopulated city districts, improved Quarantine Hut and Workshop buildings, and resources you've acquired.
